The basis of almost all dynamical processes in matter around us are atoms and electrons in motion. Observation calls for a combination of Angstrom and attosecond resolution. The requested device, an ultrafast electron microscope with laser compression and single-pulse-detection, will enable a direct view into the complex and fundamental processes of light-matter interaction from an atomistic, movie-like perspective. These possibilities of the requested device will promote novel insights into the ultrafast foundations of dynamical processes of any kind.
