法然上人の行状を描いた法然上人絵伝のうち最も浩瀚で代表的な遺例である知恩院所蔵48巻を正本とし、後伏見上皇の命で引き続き作られたと伝えられる副本すなわち当麻寺奥院本48巻について、当麻寺奥院保管分の12巻、東京国立博物館保管分の6巻、奈良国立博物館保管分のうちの10巻について調査・撮影を行い、各巻の絵・詞全段のカラー焼付け印画、拡大写真を含むカラースライド等の資料を得、整理保管した。48巻全巻の調査が不可能であったのは、当初申請の2年計画が単年度分しか認められなかった事、奈良国立博物館スタッフの多忙により同館保存分の調査・撮影が一部にとどまった事による。上記資料にもとずき、またカラースライドをTV画面に映し出すカメラを活用して、当麻寺奥院本そのものの、図様・画風を詳細に把握し、正体との詞・絵の比較検討を行った。その結果、全てではないが予想以上に副本の正本に劣らぬ優れた表現が明らかになりつつある。残りの巻の調査・撮影を継続して行い(平成6年度科研費申請中)、正・副両本の総合的な比較研究を行い、副本制作の実態を明らかにするとともに、絵画の転写あるいは副本制作に伴う変容の問題を考察したい。
