项目摘要

今回の科学研究費補助金では、「明治前期の天皇制機構形成の研究」を課題とし、幕末維新期の天皇陵修覆事業、および明治新政権成立後の宮内省関係者・華族の諸活動について、調査・研究を行った。天皇陵修覆事業については、その推進役となった館林藩家老の岡谷繁實に関する諸史料の調査・収集を実施した。8月31日から9月2日にかけて館林市立図書館に出張し、同館所蔵「岡谷文書」のなかの「寒香園叢書」を主に写真撮影した。また、宮内省関係者や華族については、岡谷繁實と提携して陵墓修覆事業に活躍し、その功績を認められて幕末の山陵奉行に任じられ、明治新政府の宮内大丞に登用された宇都宮藩の戸田忠至に関する諸史料の調査・収集を行った。1・2月には、栃木県立文書館や栃木県立図書館に出張し、戸田忠至や宇都宮・高徳両藩関係の史料を調査・収集した。これらの収集史料については、写真・コピー版を作成し、ファイル化した。岡谷繁實の活動は、これまで歴史学界でも明らかにされてなく、今回の関係史料の整理・分析により、幕末の尊皇運動、明治新政府になってからの民部・内務省官僚や地方官、さらには晩年の歴史編纂など、岡谷の多彩な活躍が解明できた。戸田忠至関係史料については、『岩倉具視関係文書』との比較・検討を通じて、天皇陵修覆事業に果した戸田の役割、嵯峨實愛や中山忠能などの華族や宮内省関係者の動向が判然となる。これらの史料調査・収集の成果は、国立史料館の『史料館研究紀要』に発表する予定で、準備を進めている。本年7月ごろに発刊の『史料館研究紀要』第25号(本来は3月発行)に、「岡谷文書-幕末・明治書翰類-(2)」として掲載される予定である。
