项目摘要

1.平成元年8月8日〜12日、および平成2年2月23日〜25日に出形県米沢市に出張し、幕末・明治初年の史料調査を実施した。具体的には、米沢市立図書館が所蔵している上杉文書・林泉文庫を閲覧し史料の筆写を行った。2.横浜開港資料館と中央大学図書館に通い。両館がマイクロフイルムで所蔵しているイギリスの対日関係文書を調査した。マイクロフイルムの原文書はパブリック、レコ-ド,フィスの所蔵である。その外務省文書やサトウ文書の必要部分を写真焼付し、数多くの史料を収集した。3.米沢藩関係の史料を分析することにより、廃止された藩の側から、明治4年の廃藩置県断行の経緯とその影響を考察することができた。これまでの廃藩置県研究が中央政府首脳の動向が中心であったのに対し、米沢藩をはじめとする諸藩の多様な対応を明らかにしたことで、より総合的な内実のある廃藩置県研究を行うことができた。その成果の一部は、「廃藩置県の政治的潮流-廃藩論の形成と展開-」として『歴史学研究』第596号(歴史学研究会)に発表した。4.イギリスの対日関係文書の研究は、おもに本国政府へ宛てた外交官の報告、私信の分析を中心に進めた。当時の代理公使アダムズや書記官サトウが、明治初年の日本の政情をどのように把握し廃藩置県断行にいかなる感想を持ったのかという点を検討した。さらにヒュ-・コ-タツッイ著の『ある英人医師の幕末・維新』なども活用し、外国側から見た廃藩置県像の考察をすすめた。その成果の一部は、「廃藩置県断行と鹿児島」として『日本学』第14号に掲載した。
