近江は中世後期村落-惣村研究の主要なフィールドとなってきたが、中世前期の村落研究とは断絶したまま、特定の地域に研究が集中してきた。このため、現地にまだ十分調査・研究の行われていない古文書が残され、しかも中世前期からの変化をたどれる二つの荘園を選び、文書調査および歴史地理学的調査を行うとともに、考古学・民族学などの成果を援用して、中世全体を通した村落の成立と再編の過程を復原的に明らかにした。湖西高島郡の山門領木津荘では、湖西最大の河川である安曇川が、中世前期までは木津荘の近くを流れており、また近辺には現在は湖中に没してしまった内湖が存在し、それが琵琶湖水運の拠点として発展を遂げた理由であったが、中世後期には安曇川の流路や陸上交通路が変化し、木津の港としての地位が低下すること、木津荘は天台座主直属の重要荘園であったが、戦国期には在地土豪が権力を持ち、荘官の文書を継承したため、子孫に木津荘関係文書が残されたことなどが明らかとなった。また湖東蒲生郡の花山院家領麻生荘では、12世紀に人的空間的まとまりを有する中世村落が姿を現し、それが荘園公領制の基礎となるが、開発が一定の進行を遂げた段階で、集村化という形で集落と耕地全体の再編が行われ、強力な規制力を持つ惣村が姿を現す。その過程で開発領主平氏は没落し、集村化の核となった鎮守・村堂に文書が遺り、供養塔などの石造物も村々に造立された。また東京大学史料編纂所で関連史料の収集を行うとともに、畿内・近国の平地部の村落とは異質な構造を見せる南九州の散村・小村地域や、長崎県の五島列島などの調査を行い、近江の村落との比較を行った。特に村落再編の契機-開発密度・水系のあり方などや、中心機能の核-領主の屋敷・氏寺かムラの鎮守・村堂かなど、中世を通じた村落編成のあり方や文書の遺り方などの特質を検討した。

The collection of related historical materials by the Historical Materials Compilation Institute of the University of Tokyo was carried out in connection with the investigation of the heterogeneous structures of villages in the plains of Kinai and Nagasaki Prefecture. The comparison of villages in the river was carried out. Special village reorganization opportunity-development density, water system, central function, core-lord's house, temple, village hall, middle age, village organization, document, legacy, characteristics are discussed.
