项目摘要

本研究の中心に据えた中エジプト・アコリス遺跡に関して、その考古学上の編年研究と出土文字史料の解読を終了した。その結果、この都市の盛衰を精確に辿ることが可能となり、第3中間期に囲壁をそなえた都市が形成され、初期イスラム期の700年前後にそれが突然放棄されたことが、こうして判明した。また、エジプトがローマ属州に転じてほどなく大規模な整備事業がアコリスで実施され、隆盛の1・2世紀を閲したのち、3世紀に入ると、都市機能の著しく低下したことが知られた。そこで、1世紀におけるローマ都市化、3世紀の機能低下、4世紀の復興、7・8世紀における崩壊という一連の推移を「アコリス・モデル」と名付けて、その推移の要因解明につとめ、同時に、このモデルの普遍性をエジプトで追究した。3世紀の機能低下については、ファイユム地方の諸都市で軌を同じくするらしい現象がみとめられた。ただし、ナイル流域の諸都市での機能低下の有無は、あまり確かめられなかった。これは資料上の制約によるもので、今後の問題として残される。低下の原因について、本研究ではナイルの水位上昇の不良を強調した。7世紀における都市の崩壊は、エジプト内でかなり普遍的にみとめられた。アコリスの出土文字史料が7世紀後半における、イスラム教徒との軋轢、人頭税、コプト教儀の異端論争のことを生まなましく伝えており、都市のコプト社会が不安に充ちていたことをこれは想像させる。アコリスのばあい、放棄に至った直接の要因はおそらくイスラム教徒の焼きうちまたは地震による被害であったのであろうが、都市という多消費型社会を維持し、または再建する活力が、コプト社会のなかにもうすでに残されていなかったようである。他都市の崩壊についても、原因としてこの点が強調されてよいと思う。
