项目摘要

古墳の外表に樹立された円筒埴輪をとりあげ、まずその精細な編年を試み、これを五期に区分した。つぎに、円筒埴輪の特徴が判明し、かつ副葬品の内容が知られている古墳に注目し、副葬品の実測調査や集成に努めた。その結果、円筒埴輪編年は副葬品の面から検証されるとともに、副葬品の内容が不明な古墳であっても、築造時期が推定できるようになった。これらの成果に基づいて、大型古墳の編年に着手した。すなわち、畿内に数多く分布する大型古墳を所在地ごとに編年し、また畿外に散在する大型古墳について、従来よりも確度の高い編年が可能になったのである。なかには、これまで説かれてきた築造時期に変更をせまる例もみられ、たとえば崇神陵や景行陵は前期後葉に、応神陵は中期中葉に、敏達陵は後期前半に比定されるに至った。いっぽう、大型古墳の築造の隆替は、それを営んだ政治勢力の変動を物語と考えられるが、そこで、畿内、畿外の古墳時代の集落遺跡資料を集成し、集落としての盛衰を追跡し、そのうえで、大型古墳の築造との時期的な関連の有無について、考察を加えた。その結果、興味深い関連のあることが知られた。まず、大型古墳の造営は、近傍集落の隆盛をもたらすばあいが多くみとめられる点である。これは、九州地方についても、また関東・東北地方についてもいえるようである。ついで、中期において、須恵器生産、製鉄、玉造りなどの手工業に関わる生産集落遺跡が、拠点的に出現し、これも大型古墳の築造の動向と関係するらしい点である。たとえば、畿内では猪名川下流域、百舌鳥古墳群域、古市古墳群域が、畿内では埼玉県北部が、そうした拠点的地域として例示しうる。これは、中期古墳の被葬者の性格を考えうるうえで、重要な事実といえる。これらの成果の一部は、『古墳時代政治史序説』にとりいれて、公表した。
