事前調査の結果、仙台藩関係の史料が東北大学・弘前市立図書館等に所蔵されていることが確認されていた。しかし、当史料は未だ未公開のものが殆どである。今回は、東北大学・弘前市立弘前図書館・北海道伊達市開拓記念館に所蔵されている史料を実地調査し、以下のものを蒐集した。東北大学 剣術:新陰流関係史料(9編)・二天一流関係史料(1編)・剣法図(1編)、柔術:起倒流関係史料((2編)・清心流関係史料(1編)、弓術:竹林派関係史料(3編)、槍術:宝蔵院流関係史料(14編)弘前市立弘前図書館 剣術:一刀流関係史料(5編)・当田流関係史料(10編)・ト伝流関係史料(3編)・林崎新無想流居合関係史料(12編)、柔術:本覚克己流関係史料(18編)、弓術:雪荷流関係史料(4編)、槍術:無辺流関係史料(1編)伊達市開拓記念館 剣術:天流関係史料(17編)・一之宮流居合関係史料(5編)、弓術:弓道故実伝書(3編)、槍術:槍術関係史料(7編)、その他:武鑑抄(1編)以上の史料を写真撮影し、現像・CH焼き付けを行い、原典に忠実な形で保存可能な状態にした。これをもとに、全史料について読解・内容分析を行っているが、弘前市立弘前図書館蔵の本覚克己流関係史料(柔術)に関しては、史料集として一般に公開する準備が出来ている。近世日本体育史研究(特に武道史研究)において、研究基盤となる基本的文献史料が不十分な中、未公開史料が公開される準備がなされたことは、意義のあることであると考えられる。
