北海道南部地域の縄文時代及び続縄文時代における木材の利用状況について、10遺跡より採取した木質遺物を住居の構造材料、道具や什器などの材料、土木工事用の資料、燃料とに分けて分析研究した。また、比較のために道央・道東・道北、更に東北北部の若干の遺跡についても分析した。その結果、次の事柄が明らかになった1.住居の構造材料-ヤチダモと推定されるトネリコ属材は、時代を限らず、全道的にの使用頻度は高い。縄文時代中期から後・晩期にかけての道南地方では、クリ材が多用されている。今回比較のために分析検討した東北地方北部の遺跡では、分析数が少ないので結論的に述べることはできないが、縄文時代後・晩期まではクリ材が多用されるが、古墳時代以降では使用される例は少ない。なお、道央地域でクリ材が用材(後述する道具・什器の材料)として縄文時代後・晩期以降である。2.道具や什器の材料-調査資料数が極めて少ないので、道具や什器の種類ごとに材料の樹種を明らかにするには至っていない。3.土木工事用の資料-検討を加えた続縄文時代の河川の漁撈施設では、河畔に生育するヤナギ属やトネリコ属の樹木が多用されている。4.燃料-コナラ属材を中心に生活圏内及びその周辺に生育する樹木を特に選択することなく用いているようである。なお、道南地域では、縄文時代の早い時期からクリ材が燃料に用いられている。今回の分析は道南地域が中心であるので、今後は、道央あるいは道東・道北地域の遺跡についての分析を実施し、全道的な縄文時代の木材利用の傾向と東北地方との差異について明らかにして行きたいと考えている。
