本研究においては、切石積みに注目して、ポンペイにおける住宅の構造計画の実際を明らかにすることを目的とした。その方法として、光波式トランシットによる3次元データからデジタル写真画像を正投影画像化することで、詳細な実測図を作成した。これら実測図を住宅と城壁について作成し、両者を比較した(平成14,15年のポンペイ現地調査)。この結果、当初の予想を覆すデータが見つかった。従来の研究では、城壁と住宅においては石材の規格は異なり、例えば城壁の石材を住宅に転用したとしても、表面を再加工する時点で、石材サイズが小さくなってしまうと考えられていた。本調査では、城壁や住宅の石材がすべて同じ規格ではなく、場所あるいは城壁の上部、下部で若干の差異が確認され、さらに、住宅の中央部の規格と城壁の大部の石材規格が完全に一致した。このことは、城壁と住宅で石材に共通する規格が存在したことを示しており、これまでの現場施工の色彩の強い構造計画(現場で必要に応じて石材を加工するため、各構造体で規格が一致しない)より、石材の生産、供給過程も含めて規格化が進んでいたことになる。これらの予想外の調査結果を受けて、最終年度では、調査を継続するよりも、新たな知見を得ることが重要であると判断し、英国のマンチェスター大学R.リング教授より、助言を得るとともに、ロンドンのローマン・ソサイアティ、マンチェスター大学にて、関連する文献の調査を行った。その結果、これらの切石積み壁体が示す特徴は、編年的な特徴としてとらえるよりも、構築技術の一側面として考えるほうが合理的であるという結論を得た。現在、この方針に従い、報告書、論文など準備を進めている
