病児保育事業は、少子化・高齢化の進む現代の子育て支援施策において、育児休業制度と並んで大きな柱と考えられているものであり、赤字経営と言われている病児保育事業を継続させている要件を明らかにするために、国内の病児保育施設を対象としてアンケート調査を行った。病児保育協議会に協力を要請し、厚生労働省から受託施設リスト・病児保育協議会加盟リストを入手した。これらの、計332か所の施設にアンケートを郵送法により送付した。186施設から回答が得られ、回収率は56%であった。回収されたアンケートのデータを入力し、解析を行った。利用者からの要望として「定員を多くしてほしい」施設は27%に過ぎず、需要は概ね満たしていると考えられた。しかしながら、併設医療機関から赤字を補填している施設は46%にのぼり、事業の魅力に加え、地方自治体と保護者の需要に応ずる形態で継続していることが明らかになった。保育所併設型では「病後児保育」の名称を受けて、急性期病児を預からないところも多く、病児保育は基本的に医療機関併設型が望ましいと思う、との意見を寄せる回答者も多く見られた。小児医療・育児支援はすぐには結果のでない不採算事業であり、効率が優先されるべきではない。子供だけではなく、育てている両親と家族とそして社会全体をサポートするものとして、少子高齢化の現在、小児医療や地域コミュニティとのかかわりを発展させてゆくことが重要であるとの結論を得た。
