The research project deals with the characterization of the scale transition between a discrete and a continuous modeling of dislocation based plasticity. The main objective is the systematic delimitation of a mesoscale modeling approach of dislocation based plasticity towards a micro-scale consideration of discrete dislocation dynamics on the one hand and a macroscopic modeling of plasticity on the other hand. This shall enable the information transfer from small scales to larger scales in the context of a bottom-up approach and furthermore provide an integration approach of a dislocation based mesoscale method into a multiscale formulation. In order to face this objective, the focus of the project will be the characterization of the “discrete-to-continuum” transition as well as the transition from a dislocation velocity based formulation considering dislocation transport and multiplication towards a gradient plasticity model based on energy-based formulations.
