本研究は,現代の周縁世界について,人間と周縁の関係,人間社会における周縁の意義を軸に考察を行った。特に,地理学と文学の領域から,周縁(周辺)的な場所・地域に焦点を当てて考察し,以下の4点について成果を得た。1)周縁的な地域として,自然環境が脆弱で、社会の衰退現象がみられる日本の山村に焦点を当て,最近の山村の変動を把握するため,経済の再編成と市町村合併を中心に統計的な考察を行った。さらにこれらの知見をもとに,21世紀の山村空間の可能性と課題について展望した(担当:岡橋)。2)周縁地域における観光の実態と問題点、観光産業と農業・漁業との関連についての調査を続け、広島県宮島町、愛媛県弓削町と宇和島市にて、聞き取り調査と資科収集を行った。また、英語圏におけるこのテーマに関する学術研究をまとめた。これらの研究を踏まえ、2004年の国際地理学会にて日本の観光に関する発表を行った。研究の成果を、ドイツの代表的な地理雑誌に掲載した。(担当:フンク)。3)アメリカ主流文化から周縁化されたアメリカ南西部の環境文学の動向について調査し、特にソローと白人女性作家の風景創造と人種・ジェンダーの関係を、白人作家とネイティヴアメリカンとの関係を中心に考察した。またネイチャーライティングの基本書である『ウォールデン』出版150年を記念する国際学会の中で、日本の『ウォールデン』受容について、世界の文化的支配とその変容の観点から発表した。(担当:伊藤)。4)「アメリカ文学における人種と地域の複合的ヒエラルキーの研究」というテーマのもとに本年度は、アメリカ合衆国の東部、南部、中西部、西部という歴史的な地域区分によって出来上がった地方主義における東高西低の力学と、ワスプ(WASP)中心の社会文化的な営みの中で、人種という要素か民族集団の階層化に作用する力学との包括的な考察に、脱構築的な要因としての非キリスト教文明の時間概念を導入して、共生型社会の一つのあり方を示唆した。(担当:田中)(担当:田中)。

This study examines the relationship between the modern world and society, and the significance of the modern world. (Note: ). 3) A thorough investigation into the trends of environmental literature in the south and west of the country from the mainstream culture of <$ The 150th anniversary of the publication of the Basic Book of the International Academy of Sciences, the reception of the Japanese "National Academy of Sciences" and the development of the world's cultural dominance (Ito). 4)This year's regional division of the history of the eastern, southern, midwestern and western parts of the United States has come out from the upper part of the regionalism, east high west low mechanics, and WASP (WASP) central social and cultural division.
