社会科学の作品のなかでは、「労働者」は、極めて画一的な姿として表象されてきた。それは、ときには「経済人」という合理的な行動規範を内面化したものであったり、「労働組合」という集合的な記述によって一枚岩として描かれるものであったり、「サラリーマン」といわれる生活スタイルの均質化した生き方を強いられたものであった。例えば、日本の近代化を担ってきた炭鉱に働く人たちを見ても、その生活様式や働き方は、それぞれの「ヤマ」によってずいぶんと異なるものであった。大資本の傘下にあったヤマと限界的生産を続ける中小のヤマでは、生産手段や生活様式は大きく異なっていた。それぞれのヤマのサークル活動の一環で作られた「炭鉱文学」は、そうしたそれぞれのヤマの生き方の差異と類似を現代に伝える作品である。「労働組合」は、働く人たちの極めて近代的な集合的表象である。それは、対立概念として措定された「資本」や「経営」に対して、労働条件の向上を目指して統一的な働きかけを行なう、目的合理性をもった集合体である。三池争議は、労働条件の変更を阻止する職場闘争から大衆運動へと、運動主体の<労働者>の自己表象をずらすことで広い支持を勝ち取ることになった。しかしそれは同時に、自らのよって立つ足場を拡散させることにもなった。連帯の意識を形成するために行なわれた運動やアジテーション、それらを伝える新聞報道は、こうした<労働者>像を構築し、それによる連帯の意識が広く拡大することになる。しかし、表象過程で削ぎ落とされる炭鉱労働者の生活世界の有様は、一時的な連帯の可能性を作り出しても、恒久的なそれにはつながらない。「エネルギー革命」と「所得倍増」というスローガンは、広く連帯を可能とした表象としての<労働者>の成立する基盤を含み込んで、労働運動そのものを古い時代の表象に置き換えることになったのである。
