This research project was aimed at improvement of learning and training skills of visually, speech and hearing, and physically handicapped children, by utilizing a computer voice recognition and synthesis device as a human-interface.During the 2-year research project, four educational softwares were developed: 'Simulation CAI of Spatial Cognition for Blind Children", "Practical CAI System for the Blind", "Language Learning-Training System for the Speech and Hearing Handicapped" and "Learning-Training System with a Robot Operation for the Physically Handicapped."The first software, operating with a voice synthesizer, emphasize the training of mobility and orientation in the simulative settings which could avoid accidents and injuries.The second software, also using a voice synthesizer, gives advantages of prompt confirmation of students' responses and allow repeated studies of students. This software enables teachers to produce quality instructional materials.The third system is intended to integrate language learning and speech training processes. The software facilitates students' pronunciation of targeted image cards' words correctly, consequently gives the credit for that effort.The fourth system, basically same as the third one except a remote controlled robot, is effective as a communication tool. It allows physically handicapped children to operate the robot with voice commands.A voice recognition and synthesis device is an important tool as human- interface for handicapped children. Creating software which performs a variety of learning tasks, is necessary for learning-training aspects.
