英文摘要
The study of physical properties such as e.g. heat capacity or electrical transport as function of temperature and magnetic field is essential for the characterization and detailed investigation of novel materials. Our group focusses on strong electronic correlation effects, arising from partially occupied d- or f-shells. We are interested in novel quantum states of matter and their low-energy excitations, such as non-Fermi liquid behavior arising from quantum criticality in heavy-fermion systems, unconventional superconductivity, magnetic frustration and quantum spin liquid behavior. To this end, we synthesize single and polycrystals, thin films and heterostructures utilizing various techniques. The applied instrumentation is dedicated to investigate these samples. We apply for a pulse-tube refrigerator physical property measurement system (PPMS) with 9 Tesla magnet and measurement options for heat capacity and electrical transport at temperatures between 1.8 and 400 K. The system will also be compatible with the 3-Helium cooler and several other options (for thermal transport, magnetization and capacitive dilatometry) of our 14 T liquid helium PPMS which is highly overbooked. The requested Major Research Instrumentation will bypass this bottleneck and provide us an important independency from the supply with liquid helium. The planned research projects utilizing the requested PPMS include:• Study of exotic ground states and excitations in Kitaev materials• Investigation of quantum spin liquid behavior and field-induced phases in new geometrically frustrated rare-earth oxides• Magnetic frustration and novel phases in metallic Kagome-layer rare-earth compounds• Design and characterization of novel layered iron-pnictide and heavy-fermion metals
