英文摘要
Diffusion chronometry has become a significant tool for the determination of the duration and rates of a variety of volcanic and other magmatic processes. These include the determination of residence times of magmas in sub-surface reservoirs and ascent rates of melts through the crust or mantle. It also has applications in a number of other areas such as the determination of exhumation rates of mountain belts, discerning the nature of tectonics on the early Earth, or in testing the reliability of palaeotemperatures obtained from studies of fossil shells. However, software tools for easy but robust application of the method are not yet available. This proposal aims to develop such tools. Some of the features that would be included in the tools are diffusion in non-isothermal systems that include several minerals and melts interacting with each other, and undergoing dissolution or growth during diffusion. The results will be made accessible to the community free of cost through different scientific channels.
