In the shadow of the cathedral choir. Liturgical choirs of protestant parishes in 19th century Berlin

The project focuses on choirs of newly founded protestant parishes of the last third of the 19th century in the fast growing capital of Prussia. The focus lies on the number of choirs, their composition, funding and function as part of the service and concert life. Especially a comparison with the older inner city parishes and the early newly founded parishes between the 1830s to 50s will point out continuity and change. Further attention is given to the development of the office of choir directors which was under change and integrated functions from the choirmaster to the suspensor and the organist. It will be investigated why the once strictly divided functions were merged in this period.
