In the early design phases, fundamental planning decisions are made which have a significant influence on the later performance of the building. This highly complex and iterative development, analysis and evaluation process is nowadays only partially supported by suitable computer-based methods. Especially the interaction of early building designs of the architect with the very detailed simulation methods of the engineers has not been solved systematically so far. However, consistent and efficient cooperation is essential for a holistic design of buildings.The main goal of the research unit is the development of novel methods to demonstrate the enormous potential of model-based and simulation-based design planning as well as the possibilities of its technical implementation. Essential foundations such as the creation of possibilities for the formal specification of building detail levels and building options including the explicit description of vagueness and its interpretation through simulation and analysis were developed in the first phase. The second phase of the research unit focuses on the reuse, optimization and knowledge generation for the creation and evaluation of building design options. The following scientific questions will be dealt with in the individual subprojects: (a) How can detailing processes between different design options be transferred as automatically and comprehensibly as possible? (b) How can experiences be easily integrated from similar projects into the current design process? (c) How can potentials for improving building designs be better identified and planners better supported? (d) How can life-cycle-based energy and environmental impact analyses be used in early phases using experience and design strategies from previous projects? (e) How can lessons learnt be used in the development and selection of structural systems and energy efficiency and low environmental impact strategies for further optimisation? (f) How can the design decisions made be explained in a comprehensible way based on existing conditions and assumptions? Methods of graph theory, case-based reasoning and machine learning are used and developed across subprojects. The proposed developments have a high application potential, and provide new approaches to solving the societal challenges and associated demands on buildings with regard to energy efficiency and sustainability taking into account the latest developments in the building industry in the field of model-based planning.
