ジェントリと呼ばれる社層がイングランド中世国家において積極的な役割を果たし始めるのは13世紀以降である。従来の研究は、その後ジェントリが王権と提携しつつ成長し、16世紀にはテュ-ダ-王朝の藩屏と呼ばれるまでに成長したという漸進的発展説を述べてきたが、最近の実証研究は、同じく中世でも13世紀と14、15世紀とでは、国制上でのジェントリの役割が異なることを明らかにした。この成果にも基づきつつ本研究では、(1)ジェントリの存在様態を13世紀と14、15世紀とで比較し、(2)これら二つの時期の変化の過程を明らかにしようとした。(1)については、13世紀ケムブリッジシァの巡回裁判記録に登場するジェントリたちの活動を通して、地域社会における彼等の政治的影響力、軍事的動員力、相互依存あるいは敵対関係を実証するために、コンピュ-タを使用して人名・地名・事項から検索し得るようジェントリのデ-タ・ベ-スを作成し始めた。14・15世紀のジェントリについても同様の作業を行なう予定である。(2)についてはこれら二つの時期の違いをよく示すと言われてきた封建制の役割を検討する、という方法でこの問題に接近しようとした。すなわち軍役制度としての封建制は、13世紀後半までに軍役が金納化されたことにより衰退し、それにつれて封建的国制も衰退したと言われてきた。しかしより詳細にこの過程を辿ってみると一概に衰退したとは言えないことが判明した。政治的にも軍事的にも諸候とジェントリの間の主従関係は、14・15世紀にもかなり強固に維持されている。二つの時代の相違はむしろ知行関係の意義が変化したことであろう。これらの論点について考察した論文を近く公刊する予定である。今後は軍制以外にも、例えば議会におけるジェントリの役割についても時期ごとの差を実証する予定である。
