長崎県の平戸島及び北松浦地方には修験者、盲僧、シャーマン的職能者(ホウニン等)の三種の民間宗教者が現在もなお活躍している。それぞれ真言宗、天台宗等の仏教、稲荷をまつる神道など崇拝対象や教派は異なってもその宗教活動(荒神バライや家バライ、屋敷神や小祠の祭り地鎮祭や船のハライ、運勢見や占い、病気直し等の祈祷)は重なり、融合しているものが少なくない。また、シャーマン的職能者の行う修法の中に修験等の影響も見られる。こうした民間宗教者の融合がどうして起きたのかという点に関して研究を行なった。本年度は平戸、北松浦におけるいくつかの盲僧寺院に関して面接調査を行い、修験寺院に関しては文書史料・遺跡(安満岳)に関する調査を行なった。従来、民間宗教者の融合は村落社会の側から共通の要請があるということが主たる理由として考えられてきたが、歴史的な視点からの考察を本研究は提示せんとするものである。平戸島においては文献史料の上では既に近世初頭に志々伎岳、安満岳を中心にした修験者の活動が見られる。そしてその活動は北松浦のみならず、対馬にまで及んでいる。盲僧(座頭)は文献上に修験と同列にあらわれることもあり、その地位は比較的高かった。管見によれば元禄の頃には既に定着している。それに加え、当地域では在地神主と法者(社人)の活躍が見られ、その中から現在のシャーマン的職能者が生まれたと考えられる。壱岐では英彦山の修験と在地神主との抗争の伝承があり、近世の初頭には既に修験と在地神主と法者の活動があり、その主たる宗教活動が荒神祭〓と病者の祈祷、神楽等ではなかったかと考えられるのである。壱岐、平戸、対馬、五島をも含む広い地域にその痕跡が見られ、平戸島は藩政の中心地でもあったので、それらが濃厚に残ったのではないかと考えられる。この点に関しては、今後さらにその調査範囲を広げた調査が必要であろう。
