项目摘要

今日、九州の各地に残存する座頭(盲僧)の語り物伝承は、その口頭的な語りの構成法(オーラル・コンポジション)、古浄瑠璃系とみられるストロフィックな旋律(音域が狭く等時拍的)、旋律型の接続のしかたが法則的であることなど、さまざまな点で中世的な語り物伝承の姿をうかがわせる。本研究では、座頭の語り物伝承のなかでも、段物(長編の語り物)の豊富な九州中西部の伝承に焦点をあて、その演唱実態の調査・分析をとおして語り物の生成・変容の仕組みについて考察した。具体的な作業手順としては、四名の伝承者による「石童丸」「小野小町」「一の谷」の分析をとおして、決まり文句(フォーミュラ)や旋律型(メロディタイプ)の現れ方、そこにおける法則性の有無、および文句と旋律型との相関関係等について考察した。とくに山鹿良之氏(明治34年生、熊本県南関町)と橋口桂介氏(大正4年、熊本市)には実際に数回語っていただき、また現在病床にある大川進氏(大正7年生、鹿児島県出水市)には文句を口述していただき、フシ付けは本人の説明にもとづいて再現した。また晴眼の伝承者である森田勝浄氏(明治34年、福岡県甘木市)は、五十年以前に作成した聞き書き台本を所蔵しており、それをもとにフシ付けや演唱ごとの異同について聞き取り調査した。以上の作業をとおして、四種類の伝承例をかなり具体的に再現することができたが、とくに文字を媒介として記憶・伝承する森田氏、台本を用いないが遂語的な暗唱にたよる橋口氏、典型的なオーラル・コンポジションの語り口をもつ山鹿氏など、複数の語り口の存在を具体的に確認することができたのは収穫であった。とくに山鹿・森田両氏の伝承例の比較から、語りと文字テクストの関係について一定の知見を得ることができた。それは文字テクストとして現存する中世語り物の演唱実態、伝承方法について考える上でも示唆的であった。
