代数体の乗法群の構造を調べることは,ほぼ単数群の構造を調べることと同じで,特に不分岐アーベル拡大体の構成との関連で調べようとすれば,単数群をある種のイデアルを法(modulus)とする既約剰余類群の部分群として把握しなければならない。そのような既約剰余類群の基底の決定と,基底成分に対する指数を決めるアルゴリスムを捜し求めた。理論上ではそのようなアルゴリスムの存在を示せるが,具体的な成分-代数的整数-について,そのアルゴリスムを実行するには,もっと別の情報-その整数から決まる別の代数的数の素イデアル分解等一が得られないため,一般的にはアルゴリスムの実行が不可能な状況である。そこで既約剰余類群の中で一次独立な単数を抜き出し,それらによって決まる行列の階数を評価することによって不分岐アーベル拡大を構成できるかどうかを決定するという結論を導くにとどまっている。但しある種の円分体と,円分体上の2次拡大については,そのようなアルゴリスムを具体的に実行できるので,もっと新しい考え方で抽象的アルゴリスムを具体化できる可能性があると思える。このような研究を今後も続けたい。また一つのイデアルを法とする除約剰余類群の特性から,そのイテアルと相補関係になっているイデアルに関する特性-ある種の相互法則-を見つけるべきだという問題も生じている。研究分担者には,代数体に関係する解析関係(ゼーター関数)の特殊値を研究していただき,それらの間に成り立つ乗法的関係式がいくつか得られた。それらを数理解析研究所における研究集会で発表された。特殊値の代数的性質の解明は,残念ながら今後の研究課題である。
