システムモデル化においては,計画数学のオペレーション・リサーチなどの関連分野への利用をみると,研究対象となる客観的指針,一般命題の確立が,数学モデルとして重要な目標である。現在の情報化社会,計算機発展による当該分野への影響を考え,計画数学を中心とした広範囲の分野におけるテーマの相互関係を明示し,その解決をめざすことが急務であった。モデル化という言葉の解釈を,計画数学における理論展開をいかにして,実際の応用問題に適用し,その反映として,新しい問題提起となりえるかということに限定した。この目的のために,さまざまなテーマによる研究発表,討論を経て,問題点の把握,また現場あるいは実務という立場からの見方を含め,さらには,現代数学への寄与という期待も込めて,大いなる計画数学の研究発展を期した。その結果,ここでは,いわゆる統計的逐次決定過程から発した,ベールマンの動的計画法によって,種々の最適化問題を解析した。たとえば,考えられることとして,最適戦略や最適値のもつ数学的性質を関数空間での滑らかさ,あるいは位相の入れかたでのこれらの連続性を明らかにする。また確率的性質として総利得関数の収束の保証,道具として不動点定理などによる特徴づけも考えた。そもそも変分理論からの変分不等式や,偏微分方程式による記述も議論した。本研究のテーマでは,基礎理論と応用との接続関係を明確にし,かつ研究の相互交流を盛んにすることであって,その波及として新しい数学理論はどうあるべきかを考える端緒としたい。
