An internal gear grinder was produced by improving the mechanism of a CNC (computer numerically controlled) external gear grinder which was previously designed and made by the present investigators. The form grinding wheel for internal gears was trued automatically on the gear grinder using the servo-motors and a dresser with a single diamond grain. Internal gears with a module of 4, 60 teeth and a face-width of 50 mm were finished on the trial internal gear grinder. Moreover, the external gears to be used for the sun and planetary gears were finished by the trial gear grinder. Power transmission efficiency of the internal gear drive with these gears is higher than 98% because the speed reduction ratio is not high and contains no differential mechanism.Two kinds of differential gear drives were designed and made to increase the reduction ratio, and running tests were conducted. As hopeful high performance internal gear drives, internal hybrid reducer were designed and made, in which one of the two internal gears was replaced by a ring roller and the sun and planetary rollers were used instead of the gears. These hybrid reducers produced appreciably lower running noise than the internal gear drives because the shock loading between teeth is modified by the oil film between the rollers.However, it should be noted that the power transmission capacity of the hybrid reducers is lower than the internal gear drives when the sizes of the gear boxes are assumed to be constant.
