山村社会変動の研究の内、本年度は山村社会の高齢者の研究と府県山村と北海道山村社会の比較研究の二点を重点的に研究課題とした。まず、前者については山村町村の高齢者の経済的基礎に関する分析を行った。一つは、高齢者の経済を支える年金受給状況の分析を受給者側から分析し、農村で多数を占める国民年金の受給状況を中心に明らかにした。その結果、今日の年金受給状況は高齢者層にとってきわめて低額であることが明らかとなった。第二に、60歳代前半から70歳代前半まで、山村社会では人々は就労が顕著であり、その点の分析を実施した。この二点から、今日の山村社会の高齢者の貧困問題が析出された。次にこの高齢者の生活を支える「家族の状況」を分析し、高齢者が山村社会でも直系家族の扶養によって、依然として大きく支えられていることが明らかとなる。しかし、その直系家族そのものが、山村社会でも減少しつつあり、農家世帯でも既に50%以下になりつつある。逆に、高齢者世帯と老人独居世帯が増加し、その層が年金中心の生活になってしまうため、極端に低収入・所得世帯になっていることが示された。日本の高齢者問題ではこの点が今後の大きな課題となる。府県山村と北海道山村の比較研究では、文化、風土、人々の生活様式など「文化と民俗」の比較研究を先行させ、高知県山村、並びに九州の宮崎県、鹿児島県山村の調査と分析を行った。基本的な課題として、北海道山村の自然・生産・生活・文化の分離性が明らかとなった。北海道山村社会の府県の移住民による開発、先住民族の文化との切断がこの民俗社会を産み出したことが明らかとなる。北海道山村と府県山村では山村住民の自然感の相違が、今日においても生活様式、民俗文化の違いとして存在することがまず明らかとなった。
