本研究では、近世日本における訴訟受理制度の一つとしての訴状箱(目安箱)に焦点をあて、その設置の背景、役割、運用・実態等を明らかにし、当時の公権力が「訴訟受理」にどのような姿勢を示していたのかを解明することを目的としていた。本研究によって新たに得られた知見は以下の通りである。(1)従来知られていたより以上に多くの藩で訴状箱が(一個または複数個)設置されていた。また、幕府も、江戸のみならず、京、大坂、佐渡、長崎、松前等、各地の御料に訴状箱を設置していた。(2)幕府初期から幕末まで、近世全般にわたって全国の多くの藩で1回または複数回(即ち一旦廃止ののち再度)訴状箱が設置されている。(3)多くは幕藩体制の矛盾が深刻化して来る江戸時代中期以降に設置されている。(4)投書をすることが認められる事項、投書人の資格については一定の指定がある場合と、全く無条件に投書が認められる場合があった。(5)投書の検閲時期、検閲体制については名藩で異なっていたが、藩主が直接検閲したと思われる藩も少なくない。(6)投書が現実にどのように処理されたのかという点についてはまだ不明の点が少なくないが、現実に藩政に影響を与えたと思われる場合も見られる。(7)以上から、幕藩領主は統治の一手段として訴状箱を巧みに利用していたことが指摘できる。
