The primary goal of the project is the large scale excavation and analysis of the late iron age settlement of Ivanceia-Sub Pădure in the Republik of Moldova (c. 220-50 BC), belonging to the so called Poienești-Lucașeuca-culture. The exavation has been prepared during the last four years by shared surveys and test excavations. Based on the results of these preparatory works the ideal excavation site could be chosen. For the first time a settlement of this culture is going to be excavated on a large sale and by including modern settlement archaeology methodology. These modern methods will include preparatory prospections (geophysics), excavation techniques (machine employment; geoarchaeological analysis of colluvial deposits) and the analysis of the excavated objects and structures. Systematic archaeobotanic, archaeozoological and isotope analysis, radiocarbon datings and archaeometrical studies of ceramics will yield results of a new quality. Based on that a comprehensive and coherent picture of material culture, inner structure, economics and architecture of a settelment of the Poienești-Lucașeuca-culture will be developed. As large scale goal the excavation results shall give an important contribution to the question of the formation and transformation of the Poienești-Lucașeuca-culture. In the focus will be thesettlement-related reevaluation of the migration hypothesis that sees the emergence of this culture as a result of large scale migration starting in the north and east german Jastorf culture and leading through Poland (Przeworsk culture) and Ucraine (Zarubiniec culture). Up to now this hypothesis is based and discussed on a small number of well excavated cemeteries. Due to the insufficient state of research settlement finds and features as important relicts of everyday live could only be taken into consideration in an unsystematic way. At this point the project will allow for new ways of interpretation. This will be based on a systematical statistical analysis of the settlement ceramics, which for the first time will yield a reliable chronology of settlement materials of the Poienești-Lucașeuca-culture. It will be supported by radiocarbon datings and the chronological results of the analysis of small finds and greek amphorae found on the site. Only now the role of foreign elements within the material culture of the settlement can be comprehensively analysed, including local ‘getic’ elements and their development. Is there a coexistence of different populations, or are there only some ceramic forms that are still in use for a certain time? As also considerable economic data and information on settlement structures will be available, we will be able to discuss the questions of mobility, possible migrations as well as processes of cultural adaptations and culture transfer based on the results of the largescale excavation of a settlement for the first time.
