INTRAARTICULAR PRESSURE RESPONSE OF TMJ DURING MANDIBULAR AND MASTICATORY MOVEMENTS

Intraarticular pressure within the superior aspect of the temporomandibular joint was examined during mandibular and masticatory movements It was revealed that the temporomandibular joint had the pumping function. Thus, this function plays an important role in the nutritional exchange between the vascular system and the articular cartilage. In a state of temporomandibular disorders (anterior disc displacement without reduction), however, the pressure buffering ability of the articular disk, which is considered to be the greatest among buffer structures of the temporomandibular joint, is reduced with a consequent increase in intraarticular pressure. Intraarticular pressures increased upon mastication and generally were higher when they were chewing elastic-hard food (kamaboko) than hard (okaki) and soft (rice) food.
