The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of vicissitudes of dwellings and settlements for natural disaster mitigation and prevention. At first, the removal of settlements caused by tsunami along the Sanriku coastal area was studied. As a result of this study, a grade of housing damage due to tsunami was concerned to remove or not. A small or large scale village could not remove after disasters. The removal of settlements were effective to mitigate the next tsunami damage in this area. However, it was difficult to clarify the relationship between removal patterns and damage. At the second, we investigated on reconstruction of housing damage caused by the 1974 earthquake off the Izu Peninsula. We could not make clear relationship between the damage of housing and removal of housing in this study.
