トヨタ、日産、マツダの各系列ディーラーについてヒアリング調査を行った結果、メーカーとディーラーの関係について以下のことがわかった。1。自動車を一台でも多く販売することがメーカーとディーラーの共通の利益と思われがちだが、実際は多くの相反する点がある。(1)メーカーはシェア拡大のために販売台数を第一に考えるが、ディーラーは利益がもっとも重要である。(2)メーカーからの各種のインセンティブはこの溝をうめようとするものだが、その出し方によってはディーラーの販売政策を歪める。(3)溝が大きくなると、ディーラーの副業への傾斜という形をとった離反を招く。2。景気変動がディーラーの経営を圧迫するのは、販管費、特に人件費が固定的なためである。(1)このため人件費や販売拠点投資などの固定費をいかに削減するか、または効率性を高めるかが問題となる。(2)また同時に中古車販売や板金工場の併設といった経営の多角化が重要となる。(3)不況はメーカーも同時に襲うため、メーカーのディーラー支援の程度はメーカーの体力差によるメーカー系列間の相違が顕著になってきている。(3)とはいえリスク負担としてのメーカーの支援はディーラー経営の上で大きい。上でみたように、メーカーとディーラーの継続的関係において、メーカーによるディーラーのリスク吸収を基本とした上でのディーラーの多角化や両者の経営インセンティブの相違は、理論モデルの作成に重要な示唆を与えるが、まだ最終的なモデルは完成していない。データについては、自販連発行「自動車ディーラー経営状況調査報告書」は、関西では最近のものしか入手できない。自販連本部か国会図書館で閲覧するために時間がかかり、データベース化はまだ途中の段階である。ただ、上記のヒアリング調査の過程で、ディーラーでさえ他社の動向を知るためには、この報告書に依らざるをえないことがわかり、この作業が重要であることが確認できた。
