有限群Gが、表現論におけるある条件を満すとき、Gはどんな構造を持つか決定せよ。という問題がある。素数pに対して、IBr_p(G)を標数pの代数閉体k上の既約モジュラー指標の集合とするとき、ミヒラ-・奥山は、次の定理を得た。pXβ(1) (pがβ(1)を割らない)任意のβεIBr_p(G)⇔PΔG、ここでPはGのシロ-p部分群とする。これに関連して、q(≠p)素数としたとき、qXβ(1)、任意のβεIBr_p(G)を満す群Gは、どんな群になるかという問題がある。マンツ、ウルフは、p-可解群Gが先の条件を満せば、Gのq-lengthは、2以下であることを証明した。そこで、これらの群の構造を、きっちりと決定することを考え、次の定理を得た。p-可解群Gが先に述べた条件を満せば、Gは、Ar_1n、qm (affine semilinear群の部分群として定義される。)の直積の正規部分群と同型になる。またβεIBr_p (G)に対してp^n|β(1)(ただしp^nはGのp-シロ-群Pの位数)を満すとき、βをdefect 0の既約指標という。このとき、defect 0の既約指標を持つ群を群論の言葉で述べよ。(これはdefect 0のブロックをもつ群と同値)という問題がある。これに関して、次の定理を得た。Gが奇数位数のp-radical群(P上trivialな既約指数をGに持ち上げた指標(k_p)Gが半単純である。)の時、Gがdefect 0の既約指標を持つ。⇔O_p(G)=1を得た。ここでO_p(G)は、Gのmaximalな正規p-部分群を表す。
