The Development and Present Condition of US Cultural Diplomacy in Asia

As part of the activities during the final year of this four-year research project, a special symposium was organized for September of 2006. Member of the research group gathered in a meeting in July to discuss the details of the symposium, and to make specific plans to publish the research results toward the end of the year.On Saturday, September 30 we had a symposium "US Cultural Diplomacy in Asia: Strategy and Practice" at the University of Tokyo, Komaba Campus. Presentations of papers were made by Susan Smulyan of Brown University and Thomas Zeiler of the University of Colorado, Boulder, who both served as overseas collaborators for this research project. One paper was presented by Fumiko Fujita, a member of this research group. These papers covered a wide range of subjects involved in cultural diplomacy, which included films, arts, natural science, education, and the world of sports. In addition to the official members of the research project, scholars and other professionals, including those in diplomatic circles, also participated in the symposium for a highly involved discussion on related issues. Masako Notoji, the project's head investigator gave comments, and Yasuo Endo served as a moderator of the session.The papers presented at the symposium and those by other members and an associate member of the research group were compiled into a research report which was published in March 2007.
