The purpose of this research project was to examine the casual and epidemiological relationships between periodontal diseases and systemic health. We obtained conclusions described below from seven different experimental groups.1.(Miyazaki H) We analyzed the relationship between periodontal disease progression and serum vitamin C, calcium and albumin concentrations obtained from community-dwelling elderly Japanese aged 78 years. The results suggest that lower vitamin C, calcium and albumin levels independently influence to progress periodontal destruction in elderly people.2.(Takehara T and Ansai T) We analyzed an association between the rate of eating and adipocyte-derived hormones, adiponectin and leptin. It was suggested that chewing well and eating slow may lead to a preventive strategy for metabolic syndrome.3.(Nakagaki H) This study was undertaken the relation between smoking habits and blood test values of persons with periodontitis. The results of this study helped clarify the … More relationship between the CRP value and periodontal disease, suggesting the possibility that this can be used as a screening test for periodontal disease.4.(Yamashita Y and Saito T) Periodontal disease was closely associated with metabolic syndrome in Japanese women. Within several kinds of adipocytokines, resistin was suggested to be elevated in the subjects with periodontal disease.5.(Nishimura F) Infection by P. gingivalis was associated with elevated LDL-cholesterol. This appeared to be accompanied by increased cholesterol synthesis, which was induced by up-regulation of HMG-CoA mRNA level by TNF-a and IL-6 produced by periodontal infection.6.(Watanabe T, Yamamoto T and Tomofuji T) We established experimental rat periodontitis model by topical application of lipopolysaccharide and proteases. In rat periodontitis model, oxidative damage of brain, heart, liver and kidney were found.7.(Shizukuishi S) FomA, F. nucleatum outer membrane protein (OMP) bound to salivary statherin-peptide and induced mucosal and systemic immune responses in mice given with cholera toxin as mucosal adjuvant.
