On July 24, 2014, the so-called IS had the famous Jonas Mosque blown up on Tell Nebi Yunus in Mosul/Iraq. Under the completely destroyed mosque the ruins of a huge Assyrian royal palace came to light, the remains of which are now accessible for the very first time. The Iraqi State granted an excavation license to the University of Heidelberg. The first excavations were carried out in 2018 and 2019. In the frame of the proposed project, geophysical prospections are to be carried out, which will provide information about the extent, structure and state of preservation of the remains of the Assyrian royal palace of Tell Nebi Yunus. Based on the results obtained, an excavation strategy and a plan for a presentation concept of the ruins will be developed.
