This project has aimed at founding a framework for academic research on Middle East security issues in Japan through collaboration with Middle East Area Studies specialists, security experts, and researchers of the international relations theory. We endeavored to go beyond the study of trends and characteristics of armed conflicts in the Middle East, and focus more on the issues of conflict resolution in the short term, and the possibility and actual task of building an international regime for preventive diplomacy in the mid-to-long term. In particular, this project aimed at identifying and elaborating the implications for Japanese Middle East policy. As well as working to create networks with foreign researchers and think-tanks, we also held a workshop abroad and opened a website in 7 languages to publicize our activities and research findings.
