项目摘要

本研究は、筑後国を代表する山岳霊場である高良玉垂宮（高良山）について、神仏分離の際に山を降りた仏教美術を追跡調査しながら、かつて神仏が習合していた山のあり方を復元的に考察しようとするものである。二年目となる今年度は、山麓の福聚寺と筑後国分寺を中心に寺院調査をおこなった。調査の主要目的は旧高良山安置の仏像を特定することであるが、各寺院が現在所蔵している仏教美術を把握し、基礎資料をまとめることも意識しながら、悉皆的な調査を心掛けた。福聚寺は、神仏分離の際に、山で重要視された高良山本地堂の本地仏を受入れた寺院である。今年度は四回の調査を実施し、彫刻三件・古文書八件を確認した。特に、明治元年から二十年代にかけての寺院記録調査の成果が大きく、仏像の元の安置場所を確定させるとともに、神仏分離の際、山内の仏像が社院局の指示で福聚寺に預けられ、その後、時間をかけながら山麓で受け入れられていく過程を明らかにすることができた。筑後国分寺は、高良山内に存在していた明静院という寺の僧侶が、神仏分離に際して身を寄せた寺院である。今年度は二回の調査を実施し、絵画五件・彫刻二件・書跡典籍五件を確認した。絵画・書跡典籍は近世の仏画・経典類で、箱書などから高良山内に安置されていたことが判明するものが多い。従来知られていなかった作品群であり、国分寺にまとまった量の仏教美術が移座されたことを証する存在として注目される。この他、高良山から国分寺が継承した元三大師信仰に関連して、大分県立博物館の企画展「疫病退散」を観覧し、類例の少ない鬼大師の木彫像などを確認した。また、一連の成果の公表として、九歴講座「高良山の仏教美術－山の内外で守られた仏像群－」をおこない、令和四年度九州歴史資料館研究論集に「福聚寺観音堂の諸仏について－高良山ゆかりの作品群を中心に－」を掲載した。
