令和4年度は、群馬県・埼玉県・茨城県内の神社に奉納された「河川工事絵馬」8点の現地調査を実施した。調査を実施したのは、埼玉県加須市内の利根川・新川3間圦工事図、利根川工事図、渡良瀬川重助裏護岸工之図、渡良瀬川護岸工之図、埼玉県幸手市の権現堂堤修復図、茨城県五霞町の築堤工事図、茨城県の利根川通為河身改修塚先村地先■工築之図、群馬県明和町の堤防工事図の8点である。調査では、所有者（管理者）に絵馬奉納の経緯や、地域に残された歴史資料について聞き書き調査を行うとともに、各絵馬について簡易な撮影および計測、現状確認を実施し、基本情報を整理した台帳を作成した。画面に描きこまれた人物や風景の描きぶりや構成・形式は様々であったものの、人物の風貌や人物像に添えられた役職・氏名、画面中に書き込まれた墨書で、その工事に携わった人物が誰であるかを、記録として残そうとしている点は共通していた。ただし、多くの絵馬は、管理者が不在の神社に保存されているためか保存環境が十分ではなく、退色や顔料の剥落が進行しており、画中に描きこまれた図像や文字が判別しにくくなっている。今後、さらなる調査のために、高精細の写真を撮影する必要があると思われる。また、今年度調査を行った8点のうち1点を所蔵する三嶋神社（群馬県明和町）では、河川工事絵馬を含む神社に掲示された絵馬26点について基本台帳を作成の上、高精細撮影および顔料分析を実施した。この調査では、各絵馬に使用された顔料の種類や使用法に、特徴が見られることが明らかとなった。絵馬の制作技法についても調査を進め、この技法が、この地域に特徴的な技法なのか、それとも絵馬の描いた絵師に特有の技法なのか、さらなる調査を進め明らかにしていきたいと考える。
