In Locke's theory of knowledge and consciousness presented in the Essay concerning the Human Understanding, as well as in Leibniz' metaphysics and theory of consciousness elaborated in the Discourse of Metaphysics, New Essays concerning the Human Understanding, Monadology etc., it revealed that the self-consciousness of the I or the Ego is possible only in relation with something beyond of the consciousness itself and, in ultimate instance, with God as the infinite intelligence.

洛克在《人类理解论》中提出的认识论和意识论，以及莱布尼茨在《形而上学论》、《人类理解新论》、《单子论》等著作中阐述的形而上学和意识论，它揭示了自我的自我意识只有在与意识本身之外的某种东西的关系中才是可能的，并且在最终的例子中，与作为无限智慧的上帝的关系中才是可能的。
