项目摘要

一部の再帰代名詞は、節を超えて先行詞をとることができる。長距離束縛と呼ばれるこのような現象は「（再帰代名詞を含む）照応形は同一領域内に先行詞をとらなければならない」という束縛条件Ａに一見反するため、長らく議論の対象となってきた。特に日本語の再帰代名詞「自分」は、長距離束縛を許す代表的な照応形として、その議論の中心に位置づけられる現象の１つである。本研究は、特に長距離束縛を許す再帰代名詞（日本語における「自分」「自身」）と長距離束縛を許さない再帰代名詞（日本語における「自分自身」「彼自身」）との差に着目することで、長距離束縛のメカニズムを明らかにすることを目的としている。ここまで本研究では、1)「自分」の長距離束縛は、視点や意識にかかわる名詞句によって媒介されているという分析（ここでは「媒介分析」と呼ぶ）に支持を与え、2)この媒介分析を踏まえて、長距離束縛を許さない照応形代名詞の存在を説明することに成功した。具体的には、再帰代名詞の内部構造を踏まえた上でフェーズ理論と呼ばれる理論を適用すると、媒介分析から、どの再帰代名詞が長距離束縛を許すかということが自動的に正しく予測されることを示した。特に長距離束縛を許さない「自分自身」や「彼自身」といった再帰代名詞の存在は、媒介分析にとっては一見問題となるにもかかわらず、先行研究においてはあまり注目されてこなかった。日本語という長距離束縛を許す代表的な言語においてそのような再帰代名詞の存在が媒介分析によって説明できるという本研究の成果は、媒介分析を支持する有力な証拠となる。
