We have constructed a novel mathematical model of the mouse photoreceptor to quantitatively describe the electrophysiological characteristics of ionic current dynamics and the changes in intracellular ion concentrations under a variety of light intensities. The new model can be used to explain the pathophysiological changes in electrophysiological properties due to mutations in the ionic current-encoding genes of photoreceptors. The results have been reported in the annual conferences, including JSMBE, LE, Kinki PS, and PSJ. Currently, we have developed a model to estimate the energy consumption&production of photoreceptors, which are linked to several retinal diseases. A better understanding of energy demand&supply may provide an effective tool for analyzing new therapeutic approaches.
