Malignant melanoma is a highly aggressive cancer that primarily originates from melanocytes in the epidermis. Over the past few decades, its incidence has been steadily increasing. Acral Lentiginous Melanoma (ALM) is a subtype of melanoma that develops on the palms and soles and is associated with a particularly poor prognosis. This project aims to explore whether Acral Lentiginous Melanoma is linked to acetaldehyde, a potentially relevant factor. To address this question, we first conducted an evaluation of melanin production using different reagents, including Acetaldehyde (ranging from 10 to 10^4 μM), Ethanol (0.01%), and α-MSH (at concentrations of 10^3 and 10^4 μM). The evaluation was performed at 6 and 24-hour time points, comparing the results to a control group. Intracellular melanin content was quantified using colorimetric methods. The initial findings indicate that acetaldehyde and α-MSH, at specific concentrations and time points, have the potential to influence intracellular melanin production in melanoma cells. However, the impact of ethanol seems to be negligible based on the tested concentrations. Further analysis and additional experiments are necessary to fully comprehend the underlying mechanisms and validate these preliminary findings.
