By collecting the strong ground motion records observed during the 1999 Chi-Chi Taiwan earthquake as well as the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake we developed a simple database which is easy treat for laboratory students. Using the developed database two kind of analyses were conducted. The first topic is "Modeling of phase spectrum to simulate design ground motions compatible with the design spectral response acceleration". In this analysis the concept of group delay time is used to model the phase spectrum. The regression equations to predict the mean and standard deviation of group were developed by using recorded earthquake motions during the Chi-Chi earthquake. Based on the regression equation and using Kalman filtering technique a sample phase spectrum is generated from which the design ground motion can be generated by the iteration method to modify the Fourier amplitude, such that the associated spectral response acceleration is compatible with the design response spectrum as specified … More in the seismic design code.The second topic is "Numerical simulation of strong motion around Adapazari basin during the 1999 Kocaeli, Turkey earthquake". The Kocaeli earthquake cased destructive damage to infrastructure in Adapazari, Turkey. This implies that the deep ground structure affected the distribution of strong ground motions, as being observed during the 1995 Hyogoken Nambu earthquake. We proposed the subsurface structure model of the basin, and simulated the strong ground motions during the main shock using 3D finite-difference methods. The results of the simulation showed that the ground motions at the downtown of Adapazari were significantly amplified by the basin-edge effect. A method to estimate the time history of input earthquake motion from the observed earthquake motion at ground surface was developed, taking into, account of nonlinear behavior of surface ground.The third topic is the comparison of the seismic hazard level of Pan-pacific and East Asia region based on seismic hazard analysis.
