The level of host immune responses against HTLV-I varies among HTLV-I-infected individuals. In the present study, we examined the effect of the routes of HTLV-I-transmission on the host anti-HTLV-I immune responses. When immune competent adult rats were inoculated with HTLV-I-infected cells, the orally infected rats were persistently infected with HTLV-I without humoral and cellular immune responses against HTLV-I, whereas all intravenously or intraperitoneally inoculated rats showed significant levels of immune responses. Similar defects of humoral and cellular immunity specific for HTLV-I were observed in offsprings from HTLV-I infected rats. These observations indicated that host anti-HTLV-I immunity can be affected by the conditions of the primary infection, especially in. This study provides an experimental evidence that vertical transmission can be a reason for low cell-mediated immunity against HTLV-I, which is considered to be one of the risk factors for adult T cell leukemia.
