This project of "Development of High-density Heat Storage and the Application Method of Latent Heat Emulsion Slurry for Energy Conservation" was supported by Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B) (2) between 2001 and 2002. The purpose of this project was to obtain the data for academic systematization and practical application of latent heat storage material by analyzing basic information on the emulsion and the high-performance latent heat storage from a viewpoint of development of new energy system. In this project, Paraffin wax water emulsion at a low melting point was used as a solid-liquid phase change material. In this project, the most suitable latent heat emulsion slurry was selected for heat storage system at first. And the physical properties (particle size, thermal conductivity, specific heat, latent heat, viscosity, etc.) of selected emulsion were evaluated, and the useful correlative equations for these physical properties were derived. Direct-contact heat exchange method between a hot or cold air and Paraffin as PCM was selected for the latent heat-release from the emulsion. The temperature effectiveness, the sensible heat release/storage time and the latent heat release/storage time were measured as experimental parameters. The useful non-dimensional correlation equations for those parameters were derived in terms of non-dimensional emulsion layer depth expressed the emulsion layer dimension, Reynolds number for airflow, Stefan number and heat capacity ratio. Finally, this latent heat storage system was evaluated in comparison with the traditional latent heat storage system, and the usefulness of proposed latent heat emulsion system is elucidated.
