The increasing use of additive manufacturing technologies goes in hand with an increasing demand of a flexible and efficient finishing process that meets the emerging challenges. For most mass finishing processes, high roughness values of additive manufactured workpieces lead to tremendous processing times. High-energy mass finishing processes such as centrifugal disc finishing have the potential of finishing additive manufactured workpieces efficiently. However, fundamental research on centrifugal disc finishing of additive manufactured workpieces is strongly limited up to now. For this reason process design for centrifugal disc finishing strongly relies on the experience of trained workers and optimisation is done by trial-and-error approaches, both resulting in high costs. Main goal of the research project is a fundamental analysis of the material removal mechanisms and a systematic build-up of knowledge on finishing of additive manufactured workpieces. This includes effects of the process parameters and media type on processing results in terms of roughness and edge rounding. A combined approach of empirical studies and simulated contact intensities is used.
