Construction of educational global standardin Kampo Medicine

In Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University, the education in Japanese Traditional herbal(Kampo) medicine is taught mainly by department of Japanese Oriental medicine. However, there are currently some problems such as the limited number of faculty or lack of a core textbook. The objective of this project is to establish core curriculum to provide education in Kampo medicine.The first two years were mainly used to research the situation in other country. In the USA there are many medical schools teaching complementary and alternative medicine(CAM). For example, at University of California Davis, they have a course that provides weekly one-hour lectures at lunchtime for 8 weeks. The contents cover many subjects including Ayurvedic Medicine, Homeopathy, Chiropractic Medicine and so on, Kampo medicine was included in the class entitled Chinese herbal medicine. In Oriental medical schools, the concepts of physiology and herbal medicine according to traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture are taught in a 5 to 6 year curriculum.In 2003, we developed core textbook for use with 110 min lectures conducted 4 times, 8 times and 16 times. In this textbook, the basic theoretical concepts, Ki,Ketsu,Sui,Yin-Yang,Kyo-Jitsu, five organ theory and six stages, the methods of basic clinical examination and the indications for the main Kampo formulae are explained. Furthermore, the potential adverse effects of Kampo medicine which is examined these three years are reviewed. To show evidences supporting Kampo medicine, we reviewed the clinical studies of Kampo medicine and published "EBM Kampo" as a subsidiary text book in March 2003.
