A COMPREHENSIVE RESEARCH OF THE BADILE FAMILY, AN ARTIST FAMILY OF VERONA BETWEEN 14^th AND 16^th CENTURY

We documented and researched the surviving art works produced between the 14^th and l6^th century in the northern Italian city of Verona and its neighboring areas. Of the fresco/panel paintings located both in public and private collections, we focused on the Badile family who produced thirteen painters and one sculptor, and exhausted primary materials in conducting comprehensive research relating to this artistic family. Our report includes primary materials illuminating the two hundred years leading to the emergence of Paolo Caliari, a great master of the Cinquecento Venetian School of Painting.We photographically documented the frescoes of twelve churches near and in Verona, as well as works by the Badile family in the collection of the Caste lvecchio Museum, one work on panel in a hospital foundation, and another in a private collection. Professor Sergio Marinelli of the University of Venice wrote a comprehensive analysis of the Badile family, while Shigetoshi Osano's exposition considers works by the Badile family in San Pietro Martire Church and Santa Maria della Scala Church, both in Verona. Morokawa Haruki's report on the mural in the nave of San Valentino Church in Bussolengo, Osano's analysis of the fresco of the apse at Santa Maria Novella Church in Erbe, and Noriyoshi Kyotani's study of the chancel fresco of the parochial church San Vincenzo in Thiene are also included. In addition, Ms. Chiara Rigoni, inspector of the Superintendence of History, Art, and Cultural Heritage in Veneto Region contributed a midterm report on the restoration process of a fragmentary fresco from the Cathedral of Vicenza and a newly discovered mural in Nanto. Of dozens of primary resources, Kazuaki Ura translated a partial list of primary documents on Giovanni Badile. Osano also published an article on the works discovered during this research in Veivna Illustrata no. 16 (2003) in Italian.
