Survey on Graduates of Physics and Applied Physics Departments as to their Careers and their Evaluation of Undergraduate Education

The purpose of this study is to obtain evaluation, and guidelines for renovations, of undergraduate physics education. The survey has been made on graduates of physics and applied physics related departments of colleges and universities as to their present job function, and the elements in the undergraduate physics education they received which they consider to have been valuable in their career formation. Participated in the survey, carried out in 2003 and 2004, were 45 departments in 39 universities. Questionnaire sheets were sent out to those who obtained bachelors degree from the participating departments 5 years ago and 14〜16 years ago. The response totaled 777.Overall, 70 to 80% of the respondent are in various area of industry, with the largest portion in manufacturing and information-telecommunication industry, and the rest in educational and research institutions. The percentage distribution is common feature among different cross section, irrespective of the school type, the highest degree he/she obtained (e.g., bachelor or master and above), etc.To the question "What are the undergraduate subjects which have been found valuable?", the highest response proportion was on "senior thesis research" (51.5%) and "experiments" (46.6%), while lecture subjects acquired 40% or less. The question "What have been the advantages of majoring physics or applied physics?" had highest responses to "Ability to extract essentials and make models" (49.7%), "Ability of logical thinking and presentations" (48.0%), and "Ability to understand the principles and make use of new technology".
