わが国と中国における木の文化の関係を知る上でも中国における遺跡出土木製品の調査がきわめて重要となる。残念ながら、中国における遺跡出土木製品の調査はわが国のそれと比べると比較にならないほど少なく、手に入るデータにも限りがある。その理由として、地中に埋没した木材が如何にして劣化するのかがまったく調べられていないことおよび中国において木製品の保存処理技術が進んでいないことがあげられる。本研究ではわが国の遺跡から出土する木材の樹種同定をすすめるとともに、遺跡出土木製品のデータベースを充実させることにある。同時に、中国における木材学、考古学の研究者と共同して、中国に生育する主要な木材の顕微鏡標本を作製し、樹種同定のための基本的資料を整備することおよび木材の劣化について機構解明するとともに、中国の環境にあう保存処理技術を開発することを目的とする。そこで、わが国の遺跡から出土した木材の樹種同定を以下の遺跡についておこなった。鬼虎川遺跡、五反配遺跡、梅木田遺跡、日影山遺跡、神谷山遺跡、春日市内土居水城跡遺跡。さらにわが国の遺跡出土木材の樹種と用途に関する既往のデータベースに新たに500文献以上のデータを加え遺跡出土木材の樹種と用途に関するデータベースを充実させた。一方、中華人民共和国の遺跡から出土する木材の樹種同定をおこなうために、同国の南京林業大学から樹種同定の専門家を招へいし、現地で集められた多くの木材試料の顕微鏡標本を共同で作製し、かつ樹種別記載を進めてきた。これら顕微鏡標本を充実させることにより、今後中華人民共和国の遺跡から出土した木製品の樹種同定ができやすい環境になってきた。これらとは別に、関連の研究として、わが国における木彫像についても樹種同定を進めてきた。一つは滋賀県にある楽浪文化財修理所の協力により19体の木彫像からの試料の提供を受けた。また、京都国立博物館内の財団法人美術院の協力により27体の木彫像から試料の提供を受けた。これらをあわせて樹種の同定をおこない大変興味深い成果をえた。
